About Us
Our goal at the Companion Horse Organization of San Diego is to bring people who may have little or no knowledge of horses to the joy of horse ownership. Horses don't curl up on your bed and purr like cats, and they don't play fetch and guard your house like dogs, but they make wonderful pets whether you ride or not. With safety for human and horse alike as a primary concern, we will provide classroom and hands-on instruction designed to teach the fundamentals of horse care to non-riders.
Many horse owners in all types of riding disciplines find themselves with horses who can no longer be ridden, or can be ridden only lightly. Finding good homes for these retired horses of all ages can be a challenge. Our desire is to help animal lovers who may never have considered owning a horse to become horse "parents". We like to say, "There's no law that says you have to ride them!"
With the recent legislative gains that are (thankfully!) putting an end to the horse slaughter industry in the United States, even more of these beautiful, mystical creatures will be in need of loving caretakers. Upon successful completion of our certificate program, participants who choose to take the next step will be assisted in finding an appropriate horse to adopt.
